Pretty Lights Unreleased 2010 Remixes

Derek Smith, aka Pretty Lights, released the Unreleased 2010 Remixes EP. They're mostly remixes of his own tracks, plus a couple of new ones like the Kanye remix and the Pink Floyd track which I haven't heard before. As someone who's favorite album used to be The Wall I was thrilled at hearing the "Time" remix. Actually, according to Pretty Lights' wikipedia page the band is named after a Pink Floyd concert poster that read "Come and see the pretty lights!". So it's strange there haven't been more reworks of this band. I personally would love to hear more!

Tonight we're slingin' stars

Star Slinger - Morning from Kairos Mosaïque on Vimeo.

Whatever you're picturing the artist of this groovy track to look like, you're dead wrong. I guarantee it. That is unless you do listen to Star Slinger in which case you may have been as surprised as I was to see this guy. Judging by the sexy, soulful sound I pictured someone quite more "DJ-esque" if that makes sense. Not that it particularly matters, it's just funny that someone can surprise you like that. If by now you're interested in what this beat master looks like check out his his performance of "Roller Skaters" at a comic book store. And below is another Star Slinger track to groove to.

Lykke Li (cont.)

I wanted to add this to the previous Lykke Li post, but I was worried the page would take too long to load. Anyway, this is a video from a few years back of Lykke Li performing "I'm Good, I'm Gone" in some bathroom (in a bathroom because of the acoustics? idk). I didn't get this until I heard her say it in the video but I guess the song is about her journey to be coming a recognized musician. In my opinion, this video does a great job of showcasing her voice. Just two dudes, a rattle(?), guitar and a long-lost Swedish Olsen triplet (does anybody else see the resemblance?) making good music in the ladies room. Below is a bonus track, which is a remix by Dave Sitek of one of the tracks off Wounded Rhymes

Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes

Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes (Hype Machine Album Exclusive) by LykkeLi

As my close friends and readers of this blog are well aware, I am a big fan of Lykke Li. So naturally I was thrilled when her new album Wounded Rhymes came out, but I noticed that I haven't really said much about it. Here goes: Mostly I want to say that I love it. But also, that it's honest and very brave. You can tell through the lyrics she's laying a lot of things in the open. The album title captures the tone of the album, they really are 'wounded rhymes'.....
"Rather die in your arms, than die lonesome. Rather die hard, than die hollow.". or "Sadness is a blessing, sadness is a pearl, sadness is my boyfriend, oh sadness I'm your girl.".
As for the music, it sounds like a natural progression from her freshman album Youth Novels. More serious, maybe more mature? Honestly, I think it's hard to go wrong when you have such an amazing talent and unique sound. Check out the album above. Some of my personal favorites are Youth Knows No Pain, Sadness Is a Blessing, Get Some, I Follow Rivers and Unrequited Love.

I Remember Shelter (The xx vs. Deadmau5 vs. Kaskade) - Austin Eterno

I Remember Shelter (The xx Vs. Deadmau5 & Kaskade) - Austin Eterno by Camilo Mazo

I completely forgot to post this song. It doesn't exactly feel new considering it's a combination of pretty well known tracks by Deadmau5, Kaskade and The xx. Nevertheless the mix is great. It has a beautifully gentle sound and the rhythmic beat of The xx complements the melody of "I Remember".

(no download link for this one, but the SoundCloud waveform comes with one)

AutoErotique - Turn Up the Volume

03 Turn Up The Volume by Autoerotique

The title says it all - this song makes me want to turn it upppp. I really don't know much about AutoErotique, except that they hail from Deutschland and a couple years back did a sick remix of Lykke Li's hit "Little Bit". Wait for the kick @ 1:30. (btw the soundcloud stream is taken from their own account so it doesn't allow downloads like my others, but I've attached a mediafire link).

Austria bound next fall :)

I would have never thought the words of Billy Joel would so accurately capture my life at a single moment. I'm studying abroad at the Vienna University of Economics and Business next fall and I cannot wait. Besides the literal connection to Vienna, the lyrics are very "of-the-moment" state of mind.

Lupe Fiasco - I Don't Want to Care Right Now ft. MDMA

I guess it was about time for Lupe to go a bit more mainstream and release a party track. I've been a fan of his work since the beginning and I have always appreciated the substance of his songs. So it's a little bit of a disappointment that he has moved away from his original rapping style. Before I say this next part I want to re-iterate how much I love Lupe Fiasco....but :/ I can't help the feeling that his songs have been getting progressively less interesting. Think back to the verses of Kick, Push or Hurt Me Soul, followed by Superstar and now I Don't Want to Care RIght Now. I know I wouldn't be saying this if I heard this song without knowing his previous work because it's still a great song. But as a fan, I want the Lupe of back in the day. When his sophomore album came out he was upset because despite all of the hype the sales were dismal. This was largely because of tracks being leaked on the internet, so I'm not posting the mp3 for this track. I'm all about free music but for this one I'm making an exception. Check it out, if you like it buy Lasers! And if you've been living under a rock for the past several years and you're not familiar with his work - look into Food & Liquor

What's your secret ingredient?....ohh right

The recipe for mashups: take one serving of a great song, combine with a serving of an equally delectable song, stir until you get the right mix of both ingredients, add a healthy dose of bass, serve hot. Then sit back, turn it up and enjoy! In the case of We Speak No Americano we've been served a steaming delicious plate of genius that's sure to satisfy the palettes of hip-hopers and club goers alike. I've been snacking on it all day.
