Jean Jacques Smoothie - 2 People (Louis La Roche Remix)

*I apologize that I haven't posted the download links for the last few posts, I'll get those up as soon as I can

James Vincent McMorrow x2

A couple of my favorite tracks off James Vincent McMorrow's album Early in the Morning. I can already imagine myself blasting it in my car when I get back to the US.

Alex Clare - Damn Your Eyes (Etta James Cover)

"At Last" by Etta James is one of my all-time favorite songs. She has such an amazing voice, but I gotta says Alex Clare's version of "Damn Your Eyes" kills it more than the original.

DJ Antoine - Ma Cherie ft. The Beat Shakers

I'm not really sure what the connection is between this video and the song lol. I heard it for the first time in Vienna back in September at the DJ Antoine concert at Praterdome. It was a really great night and the crowd went nuts when he played this one.

Sunday Spotlight

"Let's clap your hands everybody,
Let's stomp your feet everybody,
Let's snap your fingers everybody and come and jump with me"

I love this video because it's so original and so happy. Double dutching? I would never think to feature that in a music video! Very simple concept that added a bit of depth to a Drum & Bass party track. I'm also super impressed that people can keep up with the rhythm of this song, no way I can move that fast! Also, if you like Flux Pavilion's sound listen to his remix of "Gold Rush" here

Remember this one?

The Weeknd - The Party (Chi Duly Remix)

On account of this being The Weeknd's Thursday LP release and my friend Chi Duly's birthday Weeknd extravaganza, I'm posting this track. Chi Duly (who you may have heard of through his mixes of Drake/Coldplay, a project called October's Very Cold, which hit Hypem's Most Popular for a couple weeks in 2010) is a friend and remix guru. This remix of The Party & The After Party is great. It changed the mood of the song, while kept it true to its original sound. Check out more of Chi Duly's projects on chiduly.com. Happy Birthday Chris (bummed I can't celebrate with you)!

The Weeknd :: Thursday

Even though House of Balloons has been out for a while, I'm still on a buzz for The Weeknd. So I was very excited about this new drop. Me and everyone else apparently. The release of the Thursday LP crashed the site as fans rushed to get their ears on the latest batch of post-after party, late-late night, sex and overindulgence themed sounds

So far, I'd say it's not quite as great as House of Balloons. The instrumentals are pretty cool, but vocally it falls short. There's too much singing and not enough rapping, and lyrically it's kind of lame. Of everything I've listened to thus far, here's my favorite:

Logic - Young Sinatra/ Mind of Logic

I have to credit Sunset in the Rearview with introducing me to Logic. Sir Robert Bryson Hall II (that's his real name) is an up and coming rapper from Maryland. What really got me on this guy was that through listening to his verses you get a sense that he's got a real passion for music. This is confirmed in his interview with Sunset. There he reveals his dedication to his craft, some of the sacrifices he's had to make and the genuineness of his character. When asked about his latest project Young Sinatra, I love his response:

"The Project Young Sinatra is the sound I have created. The elegant, classy yet raw sounds of the educated Hip Hop Culture."

Elegant, classy yet raw....how sexy is that? To wrap up, I love this dude's flow and I'm very excited about what he'll give us in the future (hope it's soon). You can download the Young, Broke & Infamous mixtape HERE and the "Mind of Logic" dl link is below.

Best Coast - Our Deal

Best Coast - Our Deal from sssnake on Vimeo.

With odes to Grease and West Side Story this video of teenage love and angst, gang "violence", and classic girl/boy miscommunication makes me l.o.l. Remember when in 8th grade you were made to watch Natalie Wood as Maria with a painted on latino skin tone, singing "I Feel Pretty"?....this is cheesier. But still entertaining.

This is also Drew Barrymore's music video directorial debut. I am loving Best Coast and it's fun to see some recognizable faces (what's up Donald Glover).

Sunday Spotlight

At this point nearly 11 million of you have watched this video, which means 11 million more people than me knew that Kreayshawn was white (?!). I gotta say I was surprised, all this time I've been picturing a Rye Rye look-a-like lol. Lapse of notice aside, this week's Sunday Spotlight is dedicated to the baddest beezy of 'em all Kreayshawn. Love this song and the fashion in this video cracks me up. Definitely no Gucci, LV, Fendi or Prada here, but **please note the Super Chronic shirt** #seattlelove

Wobbleland 2011 Compilation

I pulled this compilation from a video shot by Jon Zombie. It's of this year's Wobbleland that went down this past January in San Francisco. You can catch the madness here. After I replayed the video to hear the mix a couple of times I just ended up converting it to an mp3 and decided to share with everyone. It makes for a great track and all of the transitions are pretty smooth, except near the end when Skrillex makes kind of an abrupt entrance. Anywayyy, enjoy!

Sunday Spotlight

I missed the deadline for Sunday Spotlight (again), which is why in the past couple of weeks this segment hasn't been as regular as I initially planned. But whatever, I'm still on Sunday so here goes...

As I mentioned in the first edition of Sunday Spotlight, I'm curious about how artists want to visually present their music to the public. I always thought this video for "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was kind of random. I don't relate Mayer Hawthorne or his music to skateboarding. Although he may be a skater himself, in which case it would make a lot more sense. Despite the disconnect, I think this video is so smooth. Everything about the beginning credits, to the slowed down speed, and the dudes themselves just kinda works. If it's about loving a special someone, loving the city of San Francisco, or loving skating....it's about love, and I'm all for that.

This haunting video is brought to you by Bat for Lashes, aka Natasha Khan. The director, Dougal Wilson, does a great job of creeping you out with surreal-esque visuals. Imagine being chased by those masked BMX-ers, yikes.

Apollo Brown - Clouds

I wasn't planning on making a post about Apollo Brown for whatever reason, but then I caught this video for Tao Te Ching and reconsidered. This song appeared on Clouds, a recently released all instrumental album. It's a very chill, introspective-like work perfect as background music when working on your own projects. Below I've included one of my favorites off the album, as well as download links for both tracks featured in this post.

Sunday Spotlight kickoff

Although it is already technically Monday where I am, it's still Sunday night for me. And tonight I'd like to kickoff a new segment on this blog called Sunday Spotlight. Each Sunday I'll be featuring a video that I find particularly interesting. I initially started this blog as a music, fashion and art outlet, but overtime the content has funneled down to just music. With this segment I hope to bring back more of the "Colors" aspect of Sounds and Colors and introduce you to some of visuals I've found to be cool.

My belief is that music should be able to stand alone without the backing of a hot artist or crazy imagery. It should be able to evoke an emotion and deliver a message with strictly sound. However, it is always interesting for me to see how artists want their music to be viewed. So to get things on the road, the first feature of Sunday Spotlight is a video from Frank Ocean's Strawberry Swing off of the album Nostlagia, ULTRA. It has really beautiful lyrics backed by truly nostalgic images.

Kids These Days - Hard Times EP

When asked what genre of music is my favorite, I always seem to respond- "hip-hop". But in reality, if I made a list of my favorite tracks it would be an eclectic mix of genres. I love music, and I don't discriminate against any genre. So when I first heard Kids These Days I was incredibly impressed with the range of musical influences in their songs.

There's Lane Beckstrom with the bass, guitar and vocals by Liam Cunningham, Greg Landfair on the drums, Vic Mensa as the MC, Rajiv Orozco with the saxophone, J.P. Floyd bringing the trombone, Nico Segal on the trumpet and Macie Stewart as vocalist. Together, the eight members of the Chicago-based group make jazzy/bluesy/funky/soulful hip-hop music.

I was further impressed when I heard that the members of the group are all barely legal. Some are students at performing arts schools, while others are still in high school. Needless to say, the members of Kids These Days have a long and bright future that is being catapulted with the release of Hard Times on June 28th. Their appearance at SXSW, as well as a mention on Jay-Z's Life+Times blog, has generated a lot of excitement around the band. Like many others out there I am looking forward to hearing the EP, but for now you'll catch me listening to Summerscent, Darling, and My Days. I'll leave you with this final quote about the band from a journalist who roomed with the group during SXSW...
"therein lies a future bursting at the seams with unfettered talent paired with an unrequited love for music felt by every member"

Stereo Hearts

I was just telling someone that the original version of this song is my jam for the summer (if summer ever makes an appearance in the Northwest). This remake switches up the vibe of the song. Now i can listen to the Gym Class Heroes and Adam Levine version while pre-gaming and the Colin McLoughlin version while nursing a hangover (as is the case now...).

This is great! After I played Combat Baby, Help I'm Alive, Gimme Sympathy, Monster Hospital, then the remixes on repeat I had to take a break from Metric. Now I'm welcoming them back into my playlists with these two remixes of Satellite Mind. Emily Haines' voice is unmistakable, but other than that the remixes don't sound like the same song. @Twittle Dragon

After I heard "Nightlight" I checked out my archives to see what I said about Little Dragon last time I posted one of their tracks.....turns out I said nothing! I was probably feeling lazy, or maybe when I made a post about "Feather" I didn't realize how much I would come to love this band.

So now, a little bit about Little Dragon: The bandmates Yukimi Nagano, Erik Boden, Frederik Wallin and Hakan Wirenstrand all went to high school together in Gothenburg, Sweden. They describe themselves as "peacelovingdreamytrancedance for the soul....". I'd say this is a pretty accurate description. The band has tried to stay under the radar, but without much success. They've been sought out by Dave Sitek for a collaboration on "If You Return" and were featured on the Gorillaz last album Plastic Beach. Now they have a US tour and will be performing at Outside Lands in SF this August. It seems fame is persistent with true talent. The song "Nightlight" is their latest release. It will be featured on the 7" Ritual Union (the release date isn't up yet). I've also included one of my favorite Little Dragon songs below and if you missed it last time listen to "Feather" here.

Tyler the Creator

Here comes an ultra-girly-merchandising-major analogy to music. Ready? Ok, some music is like five inch furry peep-toe ankle boots. It's true. It sounds like it could be pretty cool, it's innovative, it's exciting. But once you own a pair, you come to realize that you're either shoveling snow into your shoes freezing your toes off, sweating in your fashion statement or wearing dripping wet, matted stilettos (wtf). Point being- there's no occasion for them.

....And the same goes for music. Case in point, Tyler the Creator. Most of you have probably already heard of him. "Yonkers" has over six million views on YouTube. I think the guy's really interesting. He has some cool things to say and definitely chooses to say them in his own way. But when it comes down to it, when the hell am I gonna listen to this music? Rape, self-mutilation, suicidal thoughts are pretty heavy subjects to vibe to. I'm not gonna turn this on in the car, or listen to this while I'm studying, and it's not exactly conducive to partying. As much as I appreciate his clever lyricism, I can't get over the subject matter. As my friend Angie said on her blog, Victory Lemonade, Tyler the Creator is NSFL (Not Safe For Life) That said, after watching this interview I can say that he's got a point. He may be blunt about it, but the things he says are not outrageous. Check out his interview below to see what I mean.

I'm looking forward to seeing in which direction he'll take his sophomore album. Maybe we'll see a less angry side of Tyler (but I doubt it).

So in the previous post I said I had no new music to post on the blog, which is still true :(. This track by London DJ, Max Sedgley, is old, like dusty. I haven't listened to this song in soo long I almost forgot about it. I downloaded it back in high school and return to it every year or so. Pretty Lights Unreleased 2010 Remixes

Derek Smith, aka Pretty Lights, released the Unreleased 2010 Remixes EP. They're mostly remixes of his own tracks, plus a couple of new ones like the Kanye remix and the Pink Floyd track which I haven't heard before. As someone who's favorite album used to be The Wall I was thrilled at hearing the "Time" remix. Actually, according to Pretty Lights' wikipedia page the band is named after a Pink Floyd concert poster that read "Come and see the pretty lights!". So it's strange there haven't been more reworks of this band. I personally would love to hear more!

Whatever you're picturing the artist of this groovy track to look like, you're dead wrong. I guarantee it. That is unless you do listen to Star Slinger in which case you may have been as surprised as I was to see this guy. Judging by the sexy, soulful sound I pictured someone quite more "DJ-esque" if that makes sense. Not that it particularly matters, it's just funny that someone can surprise you like that. Lykke Li (cont.)

I wanted to add this to the previous Lykke Li post, but I was worried the page would take too long to load. Anyway, this is a video from a few years back of Lykke Li performing "I'm Good, I'm Gone" in some bathroom (in a bathroom because of the acoustics? idk). I didn't get this until I heard her say it in the video but I guess the song is about her journey to be coming a recognized musician. In my opinion, this video does a great job of showcasing her voice. Just two dudes, a rattle(?), guitar and a long-lost Swedish Olsen triplet (does anybody else see the resemblance?) making good music in the ladies room. Below is a bonus track, which is a remix by Dave Sitek of one of the tracks off Wounded Rhymes

I Follow Rivers (Dave Sitek remix) by Ragged Words

Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes

Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes (Hype Machine Album Exclusive) by LykkeLi

As my close friends and readers of this blog are well aware, I am a big fan of Lykke Li. So naturally I was thrilled when her new album Wounded Rhymes came out, but I noticed that I haven't really said much about it. Here goes: Mostly I want to say that I love it. But also, that it's honest and very brave. You can tell through the lyrics she's laying a lot of things in the open. The album title captures the tone of the album, they really are 'wounded rhymes'.....
"Rather die in your arms, than die lonesome. Rather die hard, than die hollow.". or "Sadness is a blessing, sadness is a pearl, sadness is my boyfriend, oh sadness I'm your girl.".
As for the music, it sounds like a natural progression from her freshman album Youth Novels. More serious, maybe more mature? Honestly, I think it's hard to go wrong when you have such an amazing talent and unique sound. Check out the album above. Some of my personal favorites are Youth Knows No Pain, Sadness Is a Blessing, Get Some, I Follow Rivers and Unrequited Love.

I completely forgot to post this song. It doesn't exactly feel new considering it's a combination of pretty well known tracks by Deadmau5, Kaskade and The xx. Nevertheless the mix is great. It has a beautifully gentle sound and the rhythmic beat of The xx complements the melody of "I Remember".

I would have never thought the words of Billy Joel would so accurately capture my life at a single moment. I'm studying abroad at the Vienna University of Economics and Business next fall and I cannot wait. Besides the literal connection to Vienna, the lyrics are very "of-the-moment" state of mind.

Lupe Fiasco - I Don't Want to Care Right Now ft. MDMA

I guess it was about time for Lupe to go a bit more mainstream and release a party track. I've been a fan of his work since the beginning and I have always appreciated the substance of his songs. So it's a little bit of a disappointment that he has moved away from his original rapping style. Before I say this next part I want to re-iterate how much I love Lupe Fiasco....but :/ I can't help the feeling that his songs have been getting progressively less interesting. Think back to the verses of Kick, Push or Hurt Me Soul, followed by Superstar and now I Don't Want to Care RIght Now. I know I wouldn't be saying this if I heard this song without knowing his previous work because it's still a great song. But as a fan, I want the Lupe of back in the day. When his sophomore album came out he was upset because despite all of the hype the sales were dismal. This was largely because of tracks being leaked on the internet, so I'm not posting the mp3 for this track. I'm all about free music but for this one I'm making an exception. Check it out, if you like it buy Lasers! And if you've been living under a rock for the past several years and you're not familiar with his work - look into Food & Liquor

The Dø - Slippery Slope

The Dø - Slippery Slope from thatgo on Vimeo.

Much to my dismay, of all of the songs by The Dø that I listened to this was the only one that I liked. I don't know what it is, but I have a weak spot for these Finnish/Swedish female artists. They all have this slightly eery tone to their voice, and Olivia Bouyssou-Merilahti, lead singer of The Dø, is no exception. Lykke Li and Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife and Fever Ray are also in this category. What drew my attention to this song was the video. It's creative and beautiful and strange, although I'm still trying to figure out what it means lol.

MC Isis and producer Grahm Zilla are the Canadian duo Thunderheist. This song is off their 2009 album titled Thunderheist and it hits hard. I love the electro-hip hop sound and I'm predicting this will be playing in my car this weekend. Isis reminds me somewhat of Rye Rye, but that may be simply because they are both female rappers and there are too few of them around to make complete comparisons.
